The 2023 Student Development Workshop (SDW) held at The Hominin House at Maropeng: Official Visitor Centers for the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.

Student Outreach Program 2019

2019

The annual PACS Open Day was hosted at the Mamelodi East Community hall, Pretoria, South Africa. The Open Day provided local students with the opportunity to interact with young professional archaeologists and gain insight into becoming an archaeologists and some of our specialisations. This event was a collaboration between PACS, SAASC, the UNISA Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, Dr Ndlovu from the University of Pretoria, SAHRA, UJ, ASAPA and PAST.

PACS hosted an 'Archaeology Olympics' at the Ikamva Youth Centre in Mamelodi, Pretoria, Gauteng. Local high school learners partook in archaeology-based group activities, which were structured loosely on activities from the Olympics.

2018

5 - 11 December 2018

With support from PAST and the Archaeological Society of Southern Africa (Northern Branch), the SDW was hosted together with PGS Heritage in Mokhotlong, Lesotho. This SDW was the first to be hosted outside of South Africa. During this event, 23 students, 7 council members, and 17 professional archaeologists attended and presented their research. In addition to managing the day-to-day logistics of camp life, the PGS team also escorted the SDW attendees on a number of field excursions to local archaeological sites.

2 - 7 December 2017

The fifth Student Development Workshop (SDW) was held between the 2nd and 7th of December in 2017, at Bushtrails Environmental Centre, Magaliesburg, Gauteng. The aim of this workshop was to create an environment in which students would be able to interact and network with one anothr while at the same time attend a series of sessions, presented by various lecturers, on topics generally not taught at universities.

3 - 8 December 2016

The 2016 Student Development Workshop (SDW) was held at Groenkloof Youth Camp, Pretoria, South Africa. With each workshop, we invite leading and early career experts to present on various topics ranging from fieldwork skills to laboratory analysis and from funding applications to publishing peer-reviewed papers and giving presentations. The workshop focused on archaeological skills and also actively engaged with the community.

30 November 2015 - 5 December 2015

The third Student Development Workshop (SDW) was held between the 30th of November and the 5th of December in 2015, at Bushtrails Environmental Centre, Magaliesburg, Gauteng. The aim of this workshop was to give students the opportunity to engage with archaeology students from other universities or countries, participate in practical sessions which universities may not offer, and discuss publishing, post-doc support, career opportunities and fields of specialisation. Students were also given the opportunity to present their research in front of their peers and established archaeologists.

1 - 6 December 2014

The second Student Development Workshop (SDW) was held between the 1st and 6th of December in 2014, at the Living Landscape Project Centre, Clanwilliam, Western Cape. The aim of this workshop was to create an environment in which students would be able to interact and network with one another while at the same time, attend a series of sessions, presented by various lecturers, on topics and issues generally not taught at universities. We also expanded the workshop to include a community outreach project, which was held on the final day of the workshop.

25 - 29  November 2013

The first ever Student Development Workshop (SDW) was held between the 25th to 29th of November in 2013 at Thabela Thabeng Mountain Reserve, Vredefort Dome. The aim of the council and the workshop was to create a functional student body that is aware of one another and our collective research, that is capable of working together and cross-pollinating research ideas.
