Giovanni D’Eramo is currently an MSc student in Palaeontology at the University of the Witwatersrand. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Archaeology and an Honours degree in Archaeology from the University of South Africa. His research focuses on the faunal assemblages from the Late Acheulean deposits of the Cave of Hearths, where he investigates taxonomic composition, taphonomy and hominin- carnivore interactions. With a specialisation in palaeozoology, Giovanni is particularly interested in reconstructing past ecosystems and understanding how faunal evidence can illuminate early hominin behaviour in southern Africa.

As Membership Secretary for the Southern African Archaeological Student Society (SAASS), he is committed to strengthening connections among student archaeologists across the SADC regions. He hopes to foster an inclusive and supportive community that encourages collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and professional growth. Giovanni is especially passionate about creating opportunities for students to engage with the broader archaeological and palaeoscience communities while developing skills to support their future careers.
