Chanté Barnard is a current PhD candidate at the University of Cape Town. Her academic basis started at the University of Pretoria where she successfully obtained her BA, BA Honours, and Masters degrees. Her previous research explored the complex socio-economic relations of foragers at Little Muck Shelter in the middle Limpopo Valley. This work examined their interactions with surrounding communities and the broader economic roles these groups occupied across the landscape during the first millennium AD. Expanding on this, her current doctoral research investigates trade relations between the East African coast and Thulamela in the Pafuri region of northern Kruger National Park. Through this research, she aims to develop a regionalised perspective on the historical trade connections between Thulamela, its surrounding sites, and the coast
