SADC Representative

Role Overview:

The SADC Representative serves as the primary liaison between the Southern African Archaeology Student Society (SAASS) and students, institutions, and organisations within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. This role plays a key part in fostering collaboration, networking, and knowledge exchange among SAASS members and their counterparts across borders.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Communication and Outreach:

    • Maintain regular communication with students, academic institutions, and archaeological organisations across the SADC region, facilitating information exchange, collaboration opportunities, and resource sharing.

    • Promote SAASS activities, initiatives, and opportunities to potential members and partners within the SADC region and beyond, leveraging various communication channels and platforms.

  2. Representation and Advocacy:

    • Advocate for the interests and concerns of SAASS members from the SADC region within the Council, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are addressed in organisational decision-making and planning.

    • Represent SAASS at relevant events, conferences, and meetings both regionally and internationally, serving as a visible and active ambassador for the organisation.

  3. Networking and Partnership Building:

    • Cultivate relationships and partnerships with student associations, academic institutions, and archaeological organisations within the SADC region and internationally, seeking opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and joint initiatives.

    • Facilitate networking opportunities and engagement platforms for SAASS members to connect with their counterparts from other countries and cultural backgrounds, fostering a sense of global community and solidarity.

  4. Webinar Series

    • Source and invite various speakers to be a part of the SAASS webinar series, ensuring a wide range of speakers from across different regions and interests.​

    • Collaborate with the social media co-ordinator to create media for these events

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect and engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultural contexts.

  • Knowledge of the social, political, and cultural dynamics within the SADC region and familiarity with international trends and developments in archaeology and related fields.

  • Networking and relationship-building abilities, with a track record of establishing and maintaining partnerships across borders and cultures.

  • Diplomacy and negotiation skills, with the ability to represent SAASS effectively and advocate for its interests on regional and international platforms.

  • Previous experience in international student affairs, cross-border collaboration, or multicultural settings is advantageous but not essential.
